Pomerol is a red wine appellation in the Bordeaux region of France.Distinguished from neighbouring Saint-Émilion in 1923, it gained AOC status thirteen years later and is now regarded as one of the region’s most prestigious labels.
While big-name wineries in the Médoc may make 10,000 or 20,000 cases of wine in a vintage, Pomerol estates usually make somewhere between 1,000 and 4,000 cases. The region has only about 1,830 acres of vineyards in total -- about the same as some large wineries in California -- divided among slightly more than 150 estates. Pomerol wine received AOC status in 1936, at which time it became an exclusively red wine region.
